The Silent House [La Casa Muda] (Graded)

Based on a true events occuring in the late 40's in a small village in Uruguay this is groundbreaking horror filmed in one single continuous shot of seventy eight minutes. The film centers on Laura, who, second by second, intends to leave a house which hides an obscure secret, unharmed. Laura and her father Wilson settle down in a cottage they have to renew since its owner will soon put the house up for sale. They will spend the night there and repair the following morning. Everything seems to go smoothly until Laura hears a sound that comes from outside and gets louder and louder on the upper floor of the house.

Stake Land (Movie Watch)

America is a lost nation. When an epidemic of vampirism strikes, humans find themselves on the run from vicious, feral beasts. Cities are tombs and survivors cling together in rural pockets, fearful of nightfall. When his family is slaughtered, young Martin is taken under the wing of a grizzled, wayward hunter whose new prey are the undead. Simply known as Mister, the vampire stalker takes Martin on a journey through the locked-down towns of America's heartland, searching for a better place while taking down any bloodsuckers that cross their path. Along the way they recruit fellow travelers, including a nun who is caught in a crisis of faith when her followers turn into ravenous beasts. This ragtag family unit cautiously moves north, avoiding major thoroughfares that have been seized by The Brethren, a fundamentalist militia headed by Jebedia Loven that interprets the plague as the Lord's work.

Hesher (Movie Watch)

Loud music. Pornography. Burning stuff to the ground. These are a few of Hesher's favorite things. And they are what Hesher brings into the lives of 13-year-old TJ & his father Paul when he unexpectedly takes up residence in their garage uninvited. Paul is grief-stricken to a point that he can't muster the strength to evict the strange squatter, and soon the long-haired, tattooed stranger becomes a fixture in the household. Hesher also befriends TJ's grandmother, who lives with them. She's extremely lonely as her son & grandson are unable to snap out of their fog. When Hesher appreciates her cooking & listens to her stories, it's as though she found a new friend, under very odd circumstances. The only friend TJ really has is Nicole, who is a supermarket cashier who comes to TJ's rescue when he first encounters Hesher. They have an odd relationship that's based, in part, on TJ's infatuation with Nicole. Although initially a rather terrifying character, over time Hesher's anarchy shakes the family out of their grief & helps them embrace life once more.

Atlus Shrugged (Movie Watch)

In a dystopian United States where leading innovators, ranging from industrialists to artists, refuse to be exploited by society, Dagny Taggart sees society collapsing around her as the government increasingly asserts control over all industry (including Taggart Transcontinental, the once mighty transcontinental railroad for which she serves as the operating executive), while society's most productive citizens, led by the mysterious John Galt, progressively disappear. Galt describes the strike as "stopping the motor of the world" by withdrawing the "minds" that drive society's growth & productivity. In their efforts, these "men of the mind" hope to demonstrate that a world in which the individual is not free to create is doomed, that civilization cannot exist where men are slave to society & government, and that the destruction of the profit motive leads to the collapse of society.
