Madman (What to Know)
Dimension Films has apparantly struck a deal to turn Michael Allred's comic character Madman into a live-action film. George Huang (Swimming With Sharks) will direct a script he'll write with Allred. Robert Rodriguez & Elizabeth Avellan will produce via their Troublemaker Studios.
Madman is a post-modernist reimagining of the Frankenstein tale, with a superhero twist. The title character, killed in a car accident, is reanimated by an eccentric doc who names him Frank Einstein & instills in him enhanced senses, psychic power & exceptional physical skills. The doc can't fix his creature's face, so Madman wears a costume to hide his scars.
The project, spearheaded by Dimension will follow a template similar to Sin City, which Troublemaker produced & Rodriguez directed with its creator Frank Miller for Dimension. As with that film, the creative behind the comic book is made an active part of the creative process to have a greater possibility avoiding the Alan Moore/Corporate syndrome. And like Sin City, Madman will be shot entirely at Rodriguez's Troublemaker Studios in Texas.

Martin Nodell (Nov 15, 1915 – Dec 9, 2006)
Martin Nodell, the creator of Green Lantern, the comic book superhero who uses his magical ring to help him fight crime, passes away at 91 yrs old.
Nodell passed away at a nursing home in Muskego, Wis., on Saturday of natural causes, his son Spencer Nodell told The Associated Press on Tuesday. He previously lived in West Palm Beach.
Nodell passed away at a nursing home in Muskego, Wis., on Saturday of natural causes, his son Spencer Nodell told The Associated Press on Tuesday. He previously lived in West Palm Beach.
Nodell was looking for a new idea for a comic book in 1940 when he was waiting for a New York subway and saw a train operator waving a lantern displaying a green light, said Maggie Thompson, senior editor of Comics Buyer's Guide.
Nodell imagined a young engineer, Alan Scott, a train crash survivor who discovers in the debris an ancient lantern forged from a green meteor. Scott constructs a ring from the lamp that gives him super powers, and becomes a crime fighter.
He brought his drawings and story lines to All-American Publications, which later became a part of National Periodical Publications, the company that was to become DC Comics, Thompson said.
The first Green Lantern appearance came in July 1940, an eight-page story in a comic book also featuring other characters. The character then got his own series, and Nodell drew it until 1947 under the name Mart Dellon. After its cancellation in 1949, the series was reborn in 1959 with a revised story line, and it has been revived several times.
Meanwhile, Nodell left the comics field for an advertising career. In the 1960s, he was on a design team that helped develop the Pillsbury Doughboy.
In later years, Nodell traveled the comic book convention circuit with his wife, Caroline, who died in 2004.
"There were myriad of fans who would come up to my dad and would say `Green Lantern got me to read' or `Green Lantern got me to do something in my life,'" Spencer Nodell said.
Nodell was born in Philadelphia and studied at art schools in Chicago and New York. Besides Spencer Nodell, survivors include another son, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Det. Axel Foley Returns (What to Know)
Our pals at Ain't It Cool News got word that there are plans for another "Beverly Hills Cop" sequel. Apparently Eddie Murphy is currently in negotiations to reprise his role as Detective Axel Foley, the Detroit cop in pursuit of a murderer, who finds himself dealing with a very different culture of Beverly Hills. At this point, there is still no word on the script, director, or Paramount's plan.
I believe as long as Axel brings back his wise ass antics from I & II & less phyiscal action from III, he just might avoid getting out shined by Rocky Balboa & John McClane's return.
Till more details peak stay tuned.
Robocop (What to know)
Through our sources at The Bloody Disgusting web site, we have been informed that the planned Robocop remake has been told to "freeze." Over a year ago, news broke that Sony Pictures was working on a remake for the sci-fi flick, with Hollywood legend Michael DeLuca (New Line's former president of production). No details were revealed other than the unofficial (and confirmed) announcement. Now apparently the studio is no longer interested in the remake, even though everyone involved in the original film were talking to the studio about being involved. In the original 1987 film a terminally wounded cop returns to the force as a powerful cyborg with submerged memories haunting him & I was hooked.
I miss the the Arcade game. Robocop was stiff but right on. Murphy!!!

Poltergeist (What to Know)
Sources have shared that the word on the street on the proposed sequel film Poltergeist: Kayeri has been shelved in favor of a shot-for-shot remake of the original 1982 film. "The original idea for Kayeri will obviously not be used for the remake." An anonymous source told the The Bloody Disgusting Web site. "Instead, the new film will be a straight-up remake of the first film. Pretty much frame-for-frame. Just think Psycho." According to the site, screenwriter Clint Morris, who wrote the script for Poltergeist: Kayeri, will not be involved in the new project. The source also sadly reported that original cast members Craig T. Nelson, JoBeth Williams & Zelda Rubinstein will not appear in the remake. The original Poltergeist, produced by Steven Spielberg & directed by Tobe Hooper, centered on a family who move into a new housing development to discover that their home was built over an ancient burial ground inhabited by angry spirits. The film spawned two theatrical sequels & an unnoticed television series, which ran shockingly from 1996 to 1999.

Dave Cockrum (Nov 11, 1943 – Nov 26, 2006)
X-Men's Dave Cockrum Passes Away
In his Superman pajamas & with his Batman blanket, Cockrum died in his favorite chair at his home in Belton, S.C., early Sunday morning. He had suffered a long battle with diabetes & related complications, his wife, Paty, said Tuesday.
At Cockrum's request, there will be no public services and his body will be cremated, according to Cox Funeral Home. His ashes will be spread on his property.
Cockrum and Wein took the existing comic, added their own heroes & published "Giant-Size X-Men No. 1" in 1975. Many signature characters Cockrum designed & co-created — such as Storm, Mystique, Nightcrawler and Colossus — went on to become part of the "X-Men" films starring Hugh Jackman & Halle Berry.
In January 2004, Cockrum moved to South Carolina after being hospitalized for bacterial pneumonia. As his diabetes progressed, his drawings became limited. His last drawing was a sketch for a fan, who attended a small comic book convention in Greenville, Paty Cockrum said.
Comic book illustrator Dave Cockrum, who in the 1970s overhauled the X-Men and helped popularize the relatively obscure Marvel Comics title into a publishing sensation and eventually a major film franchise, died Sunday. He was 63.

At Marvel Comics, Cockrum and writer Len Wein were handed the X-Men. The comic had been created in 1963 as a group of young outcasts enrolled in an academy for mutants, but the premise failed to capture fans.

Many signature characters Cockrum designed & co-created — such as Storm, Mystique, Nightcrawler and Colossus — went on to become part of the "X-Men" films starring Hugh Jackman & Halle Berry.
Cockrum received no movie royalties, said family friend Clifford Meth, who organized efforts to help Cockrum and his family during his protracted medical care.
"Dave saw the movie and he cried — not because he was bitter," Meth said. "He cried because his characters were on screen and they were living."
Cockrum was born in Pendleton, Ore., the son of an Air Force officer. He set aside his interest in art while serving in Vietnam for the U.S. Navy. He moved to NYC after leaving the service & got his big break in the early 1970s, drawing the Legion of Super-Heroes for DC Comics before moving to Marvel.

Meth said Cockrum, who will be cremated in a Green Lantern shirt, will be remembered as "a comic incarnate."
"He had a genuine love for comics and for science fiction and for fantasy, and he lived in it," Meth said. "He loved his work."

MGM News (What to Know)
According to Varity, MGM Chief Exec Harry Sloan was in London for the world premiere of "Casino Royale," where he highlighted MGM's five core franchises - Bond, the Pink Panther, Thomas Crown, Rocky and the Hobbit.
Next year is likely to see MGM go into production with new installments the first three.
Steve Martin recently delivered a script for the latest "Pink Panther" and no one knows why.
The next "Thomas Crown", starring Pierce Brosnan, nice to know MGM holds Pierce's charm in high regards, is scheduled for March. While Daniel Craig, the new Bond boy, will be returning in the sequel to "Casino Royale." No shocker there.
"Rocky Balboa" will be the LAST installment in that franchise, no really?, Because Sylvester Stallone's title character will be too old to get back in the ring, like that ever stopped money from being made.
As for the real news, "The Hobbit," was confirmed that MGM was currently in advanced talks with Peter Jackson to make two films based on JRR Tolkein's "Prequel" to "The Lord of the Rings." The first would be a direct adaptation of "The Hobbit," & the second would be drawn from "footnotes & source material connecting 'The Hobbit' with 'Lord of the Rings."' Yet the interesting news leaked out through "The Lord of the Rings'" fansite TheOneRing.net had been that an official statement from Peter Jackson & Fran Walsh about The "Hobbit" had been released saying that the two had been passed over by New Line due to rights issues & possibly Wingnut Films' lawsuit against the studio regarding "The Fellowship of the Ring,", but due to returning rights & fan out cry it has been finally decided that "The Hobbit" & the mystery second "Lord of the Rings" prequel will be helmed by Jackson without question. Good news to hear, I'd say.
So while it appears the core franchises are no-brainers, except for "The Pink Panther" which is a cosmic joke to say the least, it was "Terminator 4" that went unmentioned, maybe giving a sad, but better off clue to its "No Arnie" future. Now we can get our collective butts angry enough at the lack of Arnie news to help that franchise out as you all did for Frodo & company. I doubt Jackson will ever make a better film then his trilogy of the Ring Saga, as I also doubt no one else should be allowed to do a Terminator chapter without Arnie.

Singer & Jackman: Wolverine & X-Men Sequal (What to Know)
Executive producer Chris Lee, producer Jon Peter, and director Bryan Singer spoke at University of Hawaii about the upcoming "Superman Returns" sequel. Singer and Peters are in Honolulu this week to celebrate Lee's birthday and to begin planning the next Superman film, which will likely begin production mid to late next year in a location yet to be determined.
Singer acknowledged that he has also been approached to direct the next "X-Men" movie. He directed the first two well-received films before turning over the reigns for the third installment to Brett Ratner, which SUCKED!.
But he added he obviously wouldn't have time to take on another large-scale project before the next Superman gets underway. He is interested, however shocking, in seeing the script for the "X-Men" spinoff "Wolverine." The Warner Bros.' sequel to "Superman Returns," which grossed barely reached a healthy $200 million in the U.S. this year, will likely hit theaters in 2009.
As for Jackman, he has told sources that the project (Wolverine) "is out to directors and no, I haven't heard anything. It's hard because you can't... we're approaching very A list directors so you can't give it to 20 of them at once."
Asked further if we can expect any mutant cameos, Jackman grinned and replied, "It's a prequel, so there won't be many. There will be other new characters." Thanks Hugh..

Indy 4 Retarded News with a Happy Ending (What to Know)
I've been annoyed for years by Lucas' choices but this one takes the cake... Our sources recently got on the phone with the writer of the Indiana Jones IV script to get all the details. Unfortunately the details are extremely disappointing, which could result in the end of the Indiana Jones franchise. Frank Darabont, the writer for such great films as "The Green Mile" and "The Shawshank Redemption," is now fed up with writing scripts that will never see the light of day, and is now completely shifting to directing full time.
The reason for his actions, is that after writing the script for the fourth Indy installment, which dealt with Indy investigating UFOs in the 50s, the script was eventually scrapped. When asked how he felt about that, he replied..."That was the most frustrating of all, and that was the straw that broke the back of me wanting to continue in that line of work. That was terrifically frustrating. I worked for over a year on that; I worked very close with Steven Spielberg.
He was ecstatic with the result and was ready to shoot it two years ago. He was very, very happy with the script and said it was the best draft of anything since Raiders of the Lost Ark. That's really high praise and gave me a real sense of accomplishment, especially when you love the material you're working on as much as I love the Indiana Jones films. And then you have George Lucas read it and say, 'Yeah, I don't think so, I don't like it.' And then he resets it to zero when Spielberg is ready to shoot it that coming year, [which] is a real kick to the nuts. You can only waste so much time and so many years of your life on experiences like that, you can only get so emotionally invested and have the rug pulled out from under you before you say enough of that."To make things worse, when asked if he believes the film will be made, Darbont said..."I don't think so. I don't think so. But that's just my opinion, I could be wrong. I just think it's fantastically bizarre that for a project that people have been trying to crack for ten years and have a writer come in and finally crack it and have a director who happens to be Steven Spielberg, one of the greatest directors of all time, and then say, "No, I don't think so." It's just bizarre to me.
I can't get into George's head." Well guess what Frank... no one does. Sadly for us Indy lovers we're going to be apparently strung along and dissed once again by Sith Lord Lucas and his out of touch, lack of inspiration and greedy ass. I don't want to see another film or project supposedly directed by you in my lifetime. I want the last three chapters of the Star Wars story to be directed and worked on my competent directors and films teams. Basically Lucas free. Please Spielberg!!! Save us!!
ADDED NEWS: (Dec 31, 2006)
Our sources have learned more details about the Indiana Jones 4 production after it was announced that George "No Imagination" Lucas gave two thumbs down to a script Spielberg and Ford loved. Now it appears a new script has been approved, a shooting month of June 2007 released and dropping date of May, 2008 has been handed over.
"George, Harrison and I are all very excited," Spielberg said. "We feel that the script was well worth the wait. We hope it delivers everything you'd expect from our history with Indiana Jones."
David Koepp, who has wrote such previous Spielberg projects as Jurassic Park and War of the Worlds, wrote the screenplay that finally got the stamp of approval from Lucas and Spielberg. An earlier screenplay by Frank Darabont had been shelved when Lucas turned thumbs down on it.
Although a spokesman for Spielberg said Monday that no casting has begun, Lucas and Ford have said that they would like to include Sean Connery, who played Indiana Jones' father, Professor Henry Jones, in "The Last Crusade."
